The battery life on the 15" MacBook Pro is better, but I cannot put a number on it right now. The battery life on my MacBook is spotty: Even though I watch the processes in the background, ever so often the processor ends up working on something, so that the battery life is reduced to about 5+ hours (including WiFi).

I have both a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" and a 2017 MacBook 12" with the i7 processor. I am still on the fence wether to go i5 or i7. I'd be thankful if anybody could run Geekbench 4 on a mid 2017 i7 MB and post the results. Open-CL might not matter much in the wild but a 300% improvement is nice to look at and gives an indication how much faster the graphics subsystem has got. Leaving weight savings, battery-life and everything else aside.īut lets look at their Open-CL benchmark:

MBA mid-2012: Multi-Core Score: 6339 (higher score) No idea how they'd differ under thermal stress with repeated runs. The MBA are 8gb Ivy Bridge i7 with Intel HD Graphics 4000, the MB 16gb Karby Lake i5 base, turbo up to 3.2GHz with Intel HD Graphics 615. The MBAs differed by two points on the multi-core score.Īll systems ran freshly booted Sierra Builds 16G29 and no other programs. Also very uniform, the two i5s returned identical numbers. It's Geekbench so take this with a grain of salt but the results are interesting nonetheless. For average users, i5 is perfect.Ran Geekbench on the two 2017 i5s we have as well as on two of the older 11-inch Mid-2012 Macbook Airs they replaced.

While i7 is a more expensive option, it is also a smart one for professional video editors, photographers, etc. You can compare the prices on the official website:ĭemanding apps and complicated, intensive tasks do require Intel i7 because with the faster processor every program will run smoothly, but the battery life will be reduced. If you are an average user, you may consider the option to spend the money smartly, on the larger hard drive, for instance. If you do not necessarily need a faster processor but need longer battery life, go for i5. MacBooks are perfect mobile devices, and battery life is extremely important. If you choose i7, you will reduce the battery life for about an hour, maybe more. There are some other things we must mention when talking about i5 vs i7, and those things are battery life and the price. Why? Because these processors have hyperthreading, which allows fast multitasking, higher clock speed, which is important for all those intensive tasks, and more cache for the tasks which are repetitive.

On the other hand, if you are planning to use demanding apps, and if you work on intensive tasks, such as a photo or video editing, i7 is certainly the way to go. If that is the case, the performance offered by i5 is more than enough for you. If you are an average consumer, it means you will use your MacBook to browse the web, watch videos, listen to the music, play the games which are not considered as graphically intense ones, and you will use some standard productivity apps. There is no need to make things complicated. Your needs will determine what is the best option for you. Before we continue with the i5 vs i7 discussion, the most important thing you will have to take into account is what you are going to use your MacBook for.
